Psychodynamic therapy

Understanding a pattern is not the same as blaming the past. It is a way to ask why this moment feels familiar.

What this actually is

The long version.

Psychodynamic therapy pays attention to the ways past relationships and experiences can shape current expectations. The past is not a script that determines every future scene. I ask what happens now, what it reminds you of, and whether that connection is useful rather than forcing a neat origin story. The relationship in therapy can also give us information about how asking, trusting, disagreeing, or withdrawing works in real time.

The past can arrive without announcing itself

A delayed message might mean a busy afternoon. It can also bring up an older expectation about being ignored. Psychodynamic work asks how a present event acquired its particular meaning. We do not have to decide that an earlier relationship caused everything that followed. We can hold more than one explanation and check each one against what is happening now.

This is different from collecting childhood details for their own sake. I want to know whether a connection helps make a current choice more visible. If it does not, we can put it down. The approach page describes how this kind of conversation can sit beside practical skills and other methods. Depth should make the work more precise, not more mysterious.

What happens between us matters too

If I ask a question and the answer feels hard to give, that moment may be worth noticing. If I misunderstand you, I want to hear that too. We can talk about how the misunderstanding landed and whether it resembles a familiar exchange elsewhere. That does not make every feeling about me. It means the therapy relationship offers a live place to examine expectations with care and accountability.

I will not insist that my interpretation is the truth. I can say what I notice, and you can tell me where I have it wrong. If previous therapy felt like explaining yourself without hearing anything useful back, the essay on when therapy did not work looks at that concern. I would rather address a mismatch in the room than let it quietly become another reason to leave.

Slow is not the same as vague

A slower conversation can still have a clear purpose. We may return to a reaction, examine its context, and notice whether the explanation changes as more becomes speakable. I will ask what you want this work to address and whether the sessions are helping us understand it. We can revise the focus when needed. There is no prize for continuing an approach that does not fit.

For low mood or disconnection, depression therapy describes how psychodynamic work can sit beside more immediate strategies. Sometimes a practical intervention matters first; sometimes the old rule beneath it needs attention. We can discuss that choice together. The free consultation is a place to ask how I work and to decide whether this kind of sustained inquiry sounds useful, without pressure to commit.

Sound familiar?

You might recognize:

  • A familiar reaction appears in very different relationships
  • Understanding a pattern has not changed it
  • A small silence feels larger than the conversation around it
  • It is easier to explain a feeling than to stay with it for a moment
How we work

The work itself.

We talk closely about the present and make space for what does not fit the first explanation. I may name a pattern I notice and ask whether I am off. If something happens between us in session, we can discuss it without turning it into a test. This work can move slowly because we are looking at how a response is organized, not only trying to quiet it for the week.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask.

Is psychodynamic therapy only about childhood?

No. We start with what is happening now and consider earlier experiences when they help explain a current pattern.

Will you interpret everything I say?

No. I may offer an observation and ask whether it fits. You can disagree; that conversation is useful too.

Why might this work move slowly?

We are looking at how a response took shape, not only at the immediate symptom. We can keep checking whether the pace and focus are useful.

Can we also use practical skills?

Yes. Psychodynamic conversation can sit alongside CBT, DBT skills, or another method when that combination fits the work.
